The Kings needed overtime on Saturday to pull away with the Game 1 win. Kings winger Marian Gaborik scored with seven seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and he ended it with another goal to give Los Angeles a 3-2 win.
"(Gaborik) is a big reason that we won the first round, and if he hadn't finished some of those opportunities it would have only gone six," Kings coach Darryl Sutter told the Associated Press. "If you look at both those goals, those are classic goals. You got to go to the net to score in the platoffs.
"Doesn't matter if we pull the goalie, still got to go to the net. Not many guys can score those goals, but you still got to go to the net."
Gaborik, whose overtime goal was his fifth of the postseason, credited teammate Anze Kopitar for the big play.
"We did a good job on the forecheck," Gaborik said. "The puck got to Kopi, he saw me driving to the net, and made a nice play. I just tried to tip it in."
Anaheim had a chance to end overtime, but Kings defenseman Alec Martinez managed to block a shot on a nearly open net from Ducks winger Corey Perry.
"He made a great play," Perry said. "I thought I had an open net, and obviously I tried to put it in, but he got just his leg on it, and I missed the rebound. Hopefully it's a difference bounce next time."
