Katie Couric Could be Savannah Guthrie's Temporary ‘Today Show’ Replacement

Katie Couric could be heading back to NBC's Today Show as a substitute co-host.

According to the New York Post, Couric, 57, is reportedly in talks to rejoin the morning show after co-host Savannah Guthrie goes on maternity leave this year. The 42-year-old attorney and journalist is five months pregnant with her first child.

The column added that despite the position being a temporary role, it could lead to a larger "job if ratings see an improvement." Viewers reportedly loved her and Matt Lauer together.

Sources at NBC told the Post that there haven't yet been any official negotiations between Couric and NBC, only "friendly talks."

The Post also added that former Today Show host Meredith Vieira has also been approached to fill the temporary position. Vieira succeeded Couric at "Today" and remained on the show until 2011, when she was replaced by Ann Curry.

"With the Today Show in a good place, we are blessed with great talent and many options to temporarily fill Savannah's chair while she's on leave, but there's no plan yet," an NBC News spokeswoman said according to the New York Daily News. "Stay tuned."

An insider added: "If it could be worked out, it would make total sense for Katie or Meredith, two familiar faces for 'Today' viewers. "While this could make sense, it is just speculation, and there have not been any serious conversations about making it happen."

In 1991, Couric was given her first chance in the co-anchor chair on "Today." She later became full time, after co-host Deborah Norville decided to leave the morning show for maternity reasons. Couric left "Today" in 2006 to become host of the "CBS Evening News."

In 2011, Couric joined ABC's "Good Morning America" as a special news correspondent. Couric's syndicated show "Katie," which also ran on the ABC network, will end in June after two seasons. The TV journalist has an agreement to serve as "global anchor" for Yahoo!
