Showtime and Xbox Studios Closer to Deal for 'Halo' Series

Showtime will soon close a deal to create a partnership with Xbox Entertainment Studios and develop a live-action "Halo" Series.

The Xbox TV production unit, headed up by Nancy Tellem, is making the series based on the popular "Halo" video game franchise - a high priority, according to Variety.

Xbox is looking to make top-end series productions based on "Halo" to improve the company's platform as an entertainment service.

To prepare for presentations at the digital Upfronts, Xbox Studios recently revealed their preliminary original content TV slate, IGN reported.

It was announced last May that director Steven Spielberg would produce a "Halo" TV series.

Showtime and Xbox Studios have taken a long time to work out a deal and arrange the show to air on Xbox as well as Showtime. Sources said that episodes are planned to air on Showtime first, and then on Xbox. More details have yet to be revealed, Variety reported.

Tellem discussed plans for "Halo" and other shows last week during Microsoft's NewFront presentation. However, she did not mention details about Showtime's role in the collaboration. The deal has involved efforts from many different companies, especially since Microsoft has viewed the franchise as a high priority.

Tellem added that no official showrunner or director was attached to the series, IGN reported.

Xbox has also been reported to be close to a deal with a team of showrunners to launch a series production of the extensive bible, which was developed by screenwriter Stuart Beattie. Beattie is well known for his involvement with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Spielberg is working with Beattie, Darryl Frank and Amblin Television's Justin Falvey on the "Halo" show. Xbox Entertainment Studios is working with 343 Industries, which manages all "Halo" projects, Variety reported.

Representatives for Xbox and Showtime declined to comment on the deal.
