The Golden State Warriors fired coach Mark Jackson on Tuesday. Although TNT analyst Steve Kerr is in talks to become the New York Knicks' head coach, Kerr reportedly prefers the job in Golden State and may instead choose to replace Jackson.
Golden State's 51-31 record and second straight playoff appearance weren't enough to save Jackson's job. The Warriors announced the termination of Jackson in a press release.
"It's never easy to make a decision of this nature," general manager Bob Myers said in the release. "Mark has accomplished many good things during his three years with the organization, including his role in helping elevate this team into a better position than it was when he arrived nearly 36 months ago. We're appreciative of his dedication and commitment since his arrival and are extremely grateful for his contributions. However, as an organization, we simply feel it's best to move in a different direction at this time."
Multiple news outlets, including the New York Post, have reported Kerr's interest in coaching the Warriors. His decision regarding taking the Knicks' job was expected early this week, but Golden State's vacancy may further delay the potential Kerr-Knicks deal.
Jackson, who compiled a 121-109 record in his three years with Golden State, reportedly was fired because of a soured relationship with the front office.
"Mark Jackson doesn't have one GSW front office ally who'll make a case to ownership to keep him," Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted on Saturday. "'He's on an island,' league source says."
Jackson is unlikely to be unemployed for long. Multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves, have coaching vacancies. If Kerr chooses Golden State, Jackson could become a top candidate for the Knicks.
