Facebook For Reform: Mark Zuckerberg Takes Selfies Beyond Social Networks

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's political advocacy group launched a new app that turns a selfie into a postcard to support immigration reforms in the U.S.

Mark Zuckerberg, one of the few youngest CEOs and billionaires around the world, is taking a fresh approach toward immigration reforms using selfies. The popularity of selfies is undeniable and using it for the purpose of improving the current immigration policy is a modern approach to involve more people into the cause. FWD.us, Facebook founder's political advocacy group, is using a new app, Selfies4Reform, which allows people including celebs, to send postcards with their selfies and messages showing support for immigration reform.

"#Selfies4Reform is a tool we're using to try to make advocacy fun and engaging. You can now show your support for immigration reform in one of the most popular ways in the digital age," the advocacy group's president Joe Green said in a statement on an official blog, last week. He also added that the Capitol Hill staff and members of the Congress agreed upon a selfie postcard to be sent to Congressional office instead of usual letters.

"It's simple, and yet very powerful," Green added.

The campaign has already gained support from several high-profile people including politicians like CA Gov. Jerry Brown and Rep. David Valadao, actors like Jared Leto and Adrian Grenier, and even supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio. The #Selfies4Reform gallery is filled with several self-portraits, showing support to the immigration reforms in their own ways.

Get Started

FWD.us has launched the mobile app so more people can join the campaign through their smartphones. The mobile app, Selfies4Reform is available for download on iOS and Android devices only, but non-smartphone users and mobile users on other platforms can show support for immigration reform from the website.

Using the mobile app is as simple and involves three steps; take a selfie, add a message and share the postcard with your rep. The mobile app launches the phone's camera from within the app and lets users take a snap instantly. Share a message describing why the reform is important to you and send it to your congressperson by simply updating your address. The app will find the representative based on the given address.

Users must update personal information by connecting the Facebook profile to the mobile app or on the website. The information will be synced automatically. Users can also share selfies on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #Selfies4Reform.
