Tesco Reveals Plans for its Own Smartphone

Tesco announced that it will release its very own smartphone by the end of the year.

The phone will run on Google's Android software, according to BBC News. The device's system will be similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S5's.

Philip Clarke, chief executive of Tesco, said the device will be pre-installed with the supermarket's services.

Representatives from the English supermarket said the phone is slated to compete with "the best smartphones available," which currently include the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2. Clarke said that the phone's price will compete with that of Google Nexus 5, which is almost 200 pounds - about $340 - less than other premium Android smartphones, The Guardian reported.

Clarke added that the second version of the Hudl, Tesco's Android tablet, would be in stores this September. The Hudl sold 400,000 units in its first three months, eventually racking up sales that totaled to 550,000.

Clarke also hinted that he plans to stay as the company's chief executive until 2020, BBC News reported.

"I'm 54 and I have been at it for 40 years," he said. "I think normally in Britain people like me retire at 60 and that gives me another six years."

The company did not reveal any details about power, screen size or the cost of the phone, International Business Times reported.

Tesco trademarked the Hudl brand in February 2013. The trademark coves tablet computers, along with screen protectors, stands, cases, earphones, in-car battery chargers and other accessories. Electronic devices, such as TV set-top boxes, electronic heart-rate monitors, and wireless speakers, are also covered.

Clarke created the phrase, "New Tesco" which represents his goal of changing Tesco's focus from large stores to smaller shops that are more involved in the needs of a local community, BBC News reported.

Clarke added that the company would open 12 big stores in the next year, but it will not open anymore large Tesco Extras.

"It is the end of new big stores," he said.
