A California man who allegedly shot and killed a college student who mistakenly entered his apartment will be released from prison as an investigation continues, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Amisi Sudi Kachepa, 68, is allowed to go home as authorities collect more evidence in the shooting death of 26-year-old Stephen Guillermo.
According to his family, Guillermo was out drinking with friends when he returned to his apartment complex around 1:40 a.m. Saturday.
Instead of getting off of the fifth floor, where he shared an apartment with his brother and sister, he got off on the third floor and headed towards Kachepa's unit.
Guillermo was shot inside of Kachepa's apartment, making many wonder if he truly acted in self-defense. Residents also said Kachepa claimed Guillermo broke off his door knob, though it remains unclear if he broke it or if Kachepa invited him in.
Kachepa surrendered to authorities and was booked into San Francisco County Jail. On Tuesday, he declined a request for comment by the Chronicle.
Guillermo was studying international business at San Francisco State University and had two part-time jobs, his family said. According to his brother, he hoped to work for the U.S. Foreign Service.
His family also described him as a gentle person, making them wonder how Saturday night's incident could have unfolded so violently.
Guillermo's brother, Marc, said the family was not happy upon hearing news of Kachepa's release.
"We're devastated," he told the Chronicle. "We're just going to try and fight for justice."
