Facebook Announces 'Fit' Campaign to Help Small Businesses Use Social Media for Advertising

Facebook Inc. is planning a campaign called Facebook Fit to attract small businesses and increase its advertising.

The campaign includes a series of events that aim to help smaller businesses use online tools, such as Facebook pages, according to USA Today.

LegalZoom, Square and Intuit QuickBooks are some businesses participating in Fit.

"We'll talk primarily about trying to make things simple and easy," said Dan Levy, director of Small Business at Facebook.

Levy added that over 25 million small businesses have active Facebook pages.

Sheryl Sandberg, operating chief of Facebook and author of "Lean In," said being able to create Facebook pages and buy ads from individual users is important for small business owners looking for new customers, The Associated Press reported.

"They don't have enough customers," Sandberg said. "This is their number one problem and we can help them solve it."

Greg Sterling, analyst with the mobile technology research service Internet2Go, said it has been difficult for companies such as Facebook and Google to get involved with smaller businesses. Because most owners with Facebook pages choose not to advertise, they limit the revenue they can make with smaller businesses.

"Many of them are struggling just to provide regular content updates or to understand how to use social media, let alone become masters of social media advertising," Sterling said.

Sandberg said that the social media company has updated its technology so that it is easier for business owners to use, The Associated Press reported.

Sandberg added that Facebook is making affordable small business advertising products. Companies will be able to pay $10 to promote a post on other Facebook pages, which they could not do in the past. Pages will still be free.

"We're hoping they'll want to become advertisers if we can help them just spend a few dollars to help them promote a product," Sandberg said.

The Facebook Fit events begin on June 3 in New York, USA Today reported.

The events will also take place in Miami on June 9, Chicago on July 10, Austin on July 24 and Menlo Park on August 5.
