Samsung Apple Lawsuit: Head of Mobile Design Leaves Company Amid Court Case, Low Sales

Samsung's head of mobile design has resigned from his position, amid a patent infringement case and low sales.

The company's executive vice president, Lee Min Hyouk took over for Dong-Hoon Chang on May 1, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Samsung told CNET the move will Chang to gear efforts towards the company's design strategy - a position he'll continue to serve.

"The realignment enables Executive Vice President Dong-Hoon Chang to focus more on his role as Head of Design Strategy Team, the company's corporate design center, which is responsible for long-term design strategy across all of the Samsung Electronics' businesses, including Mobile Communications," Samsung said in the statement.

Samsung recently faced backlash about the company making its Galaxy S5 smartphones similar to Apple's iPhone. According to Bloomberg, a U.S. jury last week ruled Samsung should pay Apple $120 million for reportedly infringing on patents. Samsung originally wanted $2 billion.

Samsung's vice president of mobile design told Reuters the phone does not mimic its competitor's large-screened smartphone.

"I've made thousands of sketches and hundreds of prototype products (for the Galaxy)," Lee Min-hyouk said. "Does that mean I was putting on a mock show for so long, pretending to be designing?"

Lee also said the smartphone was made using a separate design plan and technology.

"As a designer, there's an issue of dignity. (The Galaxy) is original from the beginning, and I'm the one who made it," Lee said. "It's a totally different product with a different design language and different technology infused."

The Galaxy S5 operates on Android's 4.4 KitKat system. The phone comes with a 5.1 inch 1080 pixel high definition screen, a 2.5 gigahertz quad core processor and 16 megapixel camera, according to Ars Technia.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 1.5 gigahertz dual-core processor, 1.5 gigabytes of RAM, eight gigabytes of storage and a 4.3 inch screen. Other features include a 16 megapixel rear camera and 1.9 megapixel lens in the front, according to gadgets.ndtv.

Samsung released the phone in July 2013.

According to Bloomberg, Lee will focus on the company's Galaxy S and Note series mobile devices.

Samsung's mobile division revenue dropped to $32.4 trillion at the end of March.
