Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced Wednesday that it will invest $1 billion in cloud technologies over the next two years.
The tech giant will be creating a cloud portfolio under the brand name HP Helion, according to PC World.
"Just as the community spread the adoption of Linux in the enterprise, we believe OpenStack will do the same for the cloud," Meg Whitman, CEO and president of HP, said in the webcast announcing Helion.
HP Helion will be available in 20 data centers over the next 24 months. The service is slated to include current HP cloud products, new OpenStack-based services, and both professional and support services, which will help businesses manage and build hybrid IT environments, ZDNet reported.
The company currently operates over 80 data centers in 27 countries.
HP has released additional cloud services and products for Helion, starting with Helion OpenStack, which will also be made to work with HP 3Par storage servers, HP's software defined networking (SDN) controller and the company's StoreVirtual storage appliances, PC World reported.
Martin Fink, chief technology officer of HP and manager of HP's cloud business unit, said the portfolio will include all of the company's cloud services. These offerings include HP's cloud management and automation software, managed services, and infrastructure-as-a-service (lassS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS). The company is also building a developer platform based on Cloud Foundry.
The company will use the investment to improve its cloud operations, which includes updating data centers, looking toward advancing important cloud tools and training consultant and operation teams, PC World reported.
Having run Openstack cloud services for the last three years, HP said it learned that "organizations require solutions that are open secure and agile," ZDNet reported.
"Customer challenges today extend beyond cloud," Fink said. "They include how to manage, control and scale applications in a hybrid environment that spans multiple technology approaches. HP Helion provides the solutions and expertise customers need to select the right deployment model for their needs and obtain the greatest return for their investment."
