San Antonio blew out Portland in Game 1, 116-92. Spurs veteran Tony Parker led all scorers with 33 points to go along with nine assists, and forward Kawhi Leonard added 16 points and nine rebounds.
"He's been doing that for a lot of years," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told the Associated Press. "It's nothing different. He's the guy that's our attack guy. (He) creates for everybody and starts the offense. He's also played very good defense this year and most people don't really see that."
While playing a Game 7 against the Dallas Mavericks in the first round didn't afford the Spurs any extra rest, Parker admitted the close-out game was a confidence builder heading into the conference semifinals.
"I think Game 7 gave us a lot of confidence for our team," Parker said. "I think team wise we played our best game in Game 7. I think tonight was a little bit of the same thing. Defensively, it was one of our best games because Portland has a lot of shooters, a lot of scorers."
The Spurs coming out strong in Game 1 wasn't a surprise to any of the Portland players.
"They did what championship teams do," Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge said. "They came out and set the tone early. Most of the guys on (Portland's) team haven't been in the second round and they've won championships. They've been here. I think they definitely came out and they let us know how it's going to be."
Parker's defense limited Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard to just 17 points, but the Spurs struggled to stop Aldridge from scoring. Aldridge finished the game with 32 points and 14 rebounds.
