A woman in New York City was fatally struck by a school bus on Thursday, the New York Daily News reported.
The unidentifed woman was crossing Second Ave. near E. 93rd Street around 3:30 p.m. when she was hit, according to authorities. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"There was a bus and and a large truck right in front of a whole line of cars," passerby Netzaan Zimmerman told the Daily News. "I noticed there was a leg sticking out from under the bus and realized it had run over someone."
Shortly after, Zimmerman realized there were children on the bus.
"That just makes it that much more horrific," she said.
The driver was allegedly so overwhelmed by the accident that he collapsed and was removed by paramedics, a report in the New York Post said.
"He was frantic," witness Angie Thompson said of the driver. "He was banging on the steering wheel."
"He was a mess," Thompson added. "He fell inside [the bus] and they had to pick him up. He looked all dazed and was wobbly."
When officers arrived on the scene, they opened the back door of the school bus and escorted the students to a nearby gymnasium.
None of the students were injured in the incident, the Daily News said. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
According to police statistics, pedestrian fatalities have dropped in the first four months of the year, down from 60 by the end of April 2013 to 40 this year.
