A 26-year-old Kansas man was fatally shot during a Mother's Day celebration on Sunday, KMBZ-TV reported.
Police were called to the scene in Lawrence around 6 p.m. after reports of a shooting. According to witnesses, the suspect got out of a vehicle and shot the 26-year-old victim outside of an apartment complex after a fight.
The victim was attending a cook-out to celebrate Mother's Day, where at least 35 others were in attendance.
Later that night, the suspect was detained by officials and questioned.
Investigators have not released the names of the victim or suspect.
Timothy Brown, a maintenance technician at the apartment complex, recalled the shooting to The Lawrence Journal-World.
"It's Mother's Day, man," Brown said. "This is insane. There were children out playing."
Sunday's murder was the sixth homicide in Lawrence since July 2013, KMBZ-TV said.
In Chicago, gun violence erupted throughout Mother's Day weekend, leaving four people dead and 22 others injured.
The most recent death took place on Sunday around 3:40 p.m., when a teenager was shot in the left side of his chest.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in grave condition but was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
On Friday, a 37-year-old woman was fatally shot after attending a family gathering before her niece went to prom.
Summer Moore, a single mother of three, was shot around 8 p.m. in her front lawn. She was later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to NBC News.
