General Motors Equips 2015 Chevrolet Malibu With 4G LTE Network Capability Via OnStar

General Motors' 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is the company's first 4G LTE-equipped vehicle.

According to a press release, the car manufacturer will officially unveil the four-door sedan in June.

The new technology, part of a collaboration with OnStar, has 200 megabytes of monthly data that plays over six hours of music. Consumers can also browse the internet for up to 13 hours, and send over 13,000 e-mails. The car's 4G LTE capabilities will work with laptop computers, smartphones, video game consoles, or tablets according to the press release.

OnStar's president said GM is paving the way for 4G LTE network technology in vehicles.

"Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac will be the first vehicle brands to market with 4G LTE connectivity offered on such a broad scale and we're excited to give millions of customers an opportunity to explore the technology without paying extra for a data plan for three months or three gigabytes," Mary Chan said. "Later this year, we will begin to offer data plans and our customers will be able to connect for as little as $5 per month."

Chan also said drivers can access the Internet without buffering or other network interruptions.

"OnStar with 4G LTE is embedded into the vehicle, meaning customers get simple connectivity for not only a Wi-Fi hotspot, but also improved access to traditional OnStar services like vehicle diagnostics, remote vehicle access, and others," Chan said. "Our customers will also have easy-to-understand data plans to let them tailor a connected car experience around each owner's lifestyle."

The system's safety and security features protect consumers from harm through Wi-Fi from installed hotspots that can handle up to seven mobile devices.

According to Fox News, consumers can try out the service for $5 a day. Other data choices are 5 gigabytes for $50 a month.

The 4G LTE costs $10 a month for GM drivers with AT&T Mobile Share Plans.
