ADT Reveals Partnership with Life360 for Home Security Expansion

ADT has partnered up with family-tracking app Life360 to expand its offerings for home security.

The home security giant plans to use the partnership to develop a subscription-based mobile security smartphone app, according to CNET.

The app is scheduled to be released later this year.

Life360 develops free mobile apps that provide a secure private network for families to share their locations and activities with each other. For a monthly fee, customers receive emergency assistance and other premium services, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"We are establishing ourselves as the hub for the family," said Chris Hulls, chief executive and founder of the San Francisco-based company. "We want to be compatible with every home, every car, every connected device, pet tracker and backpack."

ADT invested $25 million in Life360, giving it a minority ownership stake in the company. Arthur Orduna, senior vice president and chief innovation officer of ADT, said the partnership is "a perfect pairing" and that the two companies share a vision of providing families peace of mind, CNET reported.

Life360 also has its own dedicated channel on IFTTT, which allows the company to sync up with a huge range of online services as well as smartphone devices like SmartThings sensors, Philips Hue LEDs and Belkin WeMo Switches.

Orduna said ADT is looking to buy tech startups in order to take advantage of Web-enabled connections among people and different apps and other products, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"This [strategic investment in Life360] is unprecedented, but not the last. It's the first in a series we plan," he said. "From the partnership perspective, we've lined up quite a few, which we'll start announcing and deploying in June."

The new app will give customers direct access to ADT's 24/7 monitoring centers, which connect users to police, fire and emergency medical response teams. Hulls said those who enroll in ADT will provide revenue for Life360, but did not provide details on just how much that would be. Orduna said he chose to partner with Life360 because of its power demands and low battery drain.
