A South Carolina woman was arrested for fatally shooting a friend after he asked her to fire a gunshot into a bulletproof vest he was wearing, Fox Carolina reported.
Blake Wardell, 26, was shot on Wednesday morning after 18-year-old Taylor Kelly allegedly missed hitting the Kevlar vest and struck him in the heart instead, police said.
Although Wardell's friends performed immediate CPR, he bled to death in the garage. Kelly was charged with involuntary manslaughter, facing up to five years in prison.
The incident took place after Wardell found an old vest during a gathering with other friends and requested Kelly to fire a single round from a small-caliber handgun, Opposing Views reported.
"It wasn't a fight. They were actually going to take a shot at the vest," Don McCown, the Anderson County deputy coroner, told the paper. "They were going to shoot the victim with the vest on. And he was shot in the chest, just above the vest."
Around 2:45 a.m., Wardell was lying dead in a garage, according to Fox Carolina. Paramedics arrived and tried to revive him, but it was too late. Blood loss was named the official cause of death.
Since alcohol and drug use wasn't involved in the tragic incident, Wardell's death has been classified as a homicide.
According to his family, Wardell had a history of mental illness. His father wrote a last post to him on his Facebook page, the Daily Mail reported.
"You took the truth with you ill [sic] never know what happen but when i got there i hope you heard me when i said i love [sic] u. i do," James Wardell wrote.
On her own Facebook page, Kelly is shown in several pictures brandishing guns, Opposing Views reported.
Kelly, a recent graduate of Belton Honea Path High School, faces up to five years in prison. She is being held at Anderson County jail with bond set at $10,000.
