Google added a new payment option, allowing users to make purchases seamlessly through PayPal in Google Wallet.
Google, the world's biggest internet search company, has added a rival payment system to its Play Store in order to give users the freedom to choose from more than one payment options. The latest addition to Google Wallet is PayPal, which welcomes a larger audience to process payments online. Although it may seem surprising on Google's behalf to add a rival to its Wallet payment system, the move justifies its goal to create more options for users to purchase online.
"Our goal is to provide users with a frictionless payment experience, and this new integration is another example of how we work with partners from across the payments industry to deliver this to the user." Ibrahim Elbouchikhi, Google Play product manager, wrote in a blog post, Thursday.
The new payment option is live in 12 countries, including the United States and Canada, Germany and Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Google is likely to bring the PayPal support to other countries soon. The new payment mode will appear in Google Wallet and existing PayPal account holders can enter login credentials and process payments online.
In addition to PayPal support, the web giant added other improvements to the Google Play payment systems. The carrier billing option, which allows users to make purchases in Google Play and add the charge to their phone bills, is available in seven new countries including Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. The service is now available in 24 countries, which covers almost half of Google Play users, Google said.
The update also allows more developers in 13 new countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Turkey, to sell apps on Google Play, bringing the total to 45 countries.
