Former "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery was recently the victim of an armed robbery when three suspects forced their way into his friend's North Carolina apartment. The "See You Tonight" singer recalled the terrifying details to Music Times saying that he and some friends had gone out to get some hamburgers and returned to his friend's apartment to watch the movie "Gladiator."
Shortly after the movie started, McCreery said there was a knock at the door.
"One of the guys who lived there, he just figured it was a neighbor," McCreery said. "He looked through his peep-hole - the guys didn't have a mask or gloves, so he didn't look suspicious at all."
The country singer said that his friend wasn't aware there were three other men out of view of the peep-hole and opened the door. The suspects barged into the apartment with guns waving.
"The first guy in the room had an assault rifle, and he put that right against the sternum of the guy who opened the door," the country singer said. "The main guy, who was casing the living room, he had a pistol to my head and a pistol at another guy's head. It definitely puts your life in perspective when you're staring down the barrel of a pistol."
According to police officials, the suspects took cash, wallets and electronics before leaving. McCreery and his friends were not hurt during the burglary. Following the incident, the 20-year-old singer updated his Facebook page assuring his concerned fans that he and his friends were ok.
"Yes, it was definitely a very scary night. Luckily, my friends and I are safe and the Raleigh PD is on the case," he wrote. "I will share more when the time is right, but as of now we do not want to do or say anything that could hinder the investigation. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and support. A huge thank you to the Raleigh PD for their quick response and hard work in solving this case."
On May 7, police arrested 19-year-old Mikkail Jamal Shaw and charged him with armed robbery and conspiracy. Police are still searching for the other suspects.
