Julia Roberts' sister Nancy Motes died from suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner.
According to the New York Daily News, an autopsy and toxicology test determined that Motes took multiple drugs and drowned. The 37-year-old dog walker and "Glee" production assistant was found dead in a bathtub last February. Her death was reported as an accidental overdose at the time.
Craig Harvey, the Los Angeles coroner's spokesman, said a list of the drugs Motes had taken will be listed in a full autopsy report, which could be released as early as next week. Motes reportedly left behind a suicide note that will be turned over to her family. The Daily News reported that the note mentioned Motes' rocky relationship with Roberts.
Roberts and Motes share a mother, Betty Lou. After the release of the coroner's report, Motes' fiancé John Dilbeck told the Daily News that Roberts and her family tried to cover up news about Motes' death.
"This is proof that Julia was manipulating the truth in terms of what happened," Dilbeck told the Daily News, Wednesday. "She persisted that this was just a drug overdose and that Nancy was a drug addict. I want everyone to know Nancy was not a drug addict. This verdict from the coroner is more proof of that. I'm still suffering and in mourning, and this is one of the worst nightmares anyone can imagine."
Motes and Dilbeck were scheduled to get married this year.
Dilbek told reporters that Roberts refused to attend the wedding and did not invite him to his fiancée's funeral, which was held in Georgia.
In April, Roberts spoke with the WSJ magazine after Motes' death, calling it "heartbreaking."
"It's hour-by-hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead," she said. "You don't want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world. But [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family. It's so hard to formulate a sentence about it outside the weepy huddle of my family."
