A 12-year-old boy accused of opening fire at a New Mexico middle school in January pleaded no contest on Friday, according to The Associated Press.
The boy's attorneys read a statement in court saying he takes full responsibility for his actions and apologizing to the families of the victims.
During the Jan. 12 shooting at Berrendo Middle School, a 12-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were injured. A faculty member was also injured, though he reportedly refused to receive medical attention when first responders arrived to the building.
Because of the suspect's age, his identity has been withheld.
He faces three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of carrying a firearm on school premises, The AP said.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 2. As a juvenile, he could be placed in detention until he is 21.
The shooting at Berrendo reportedly only lasted 10 seconds, thanks to John Masterson, a courageous teacher who conviced the boy to put his weapon down.
"(Masterson) stood there and allowed a gun to be pointed right at him," New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said. "And to talk down that young boy to drop the gun so there would be no more young kids hurt."
In October, a 12-year-old boy in Nevada killed a teacher and injured two students before taking his own life.
