A high school student was found dead Saturday, at a hotel in north Houston, a day after senior prom party.
According to the boyfriend of 17-year-old Jacqueline Gomez, she stopped breathing and he then called 911. The authorities arrived at the Hyatt Hotel where the two were staying after their prom party at the hotel's ballroom the previous night.
The investigators found signs of alcohol in the room. However, they do not know what led to her death. "Of course, prescription painkillers is something we're looking at as well," Detective Mike Miller of Houston Police Department homicide, said.
Police speculate that an after party in Gomez's room post-prom might have gone out of control. "You can imagine if you have ever attended a high school prom what goes on there," said Det. Miller. "This is no exception."
According to KHOU, the police took Gomez's boyfriend, who is reportedly her former classmate, in for questioning and to know what exactly happened the night.
"The boyfriend, at this point, is being completely honest with us and we have no reason to believe that he at all contributed to this death," said Det. Miller. "But in my line of work, you have to be absolutely sure."
Gomez, who was a senior student at MacArthur High School, told her friends Leandra Mendez and Justice Gonzalez that she would be spending the weekend with her boyfriend. "Me and Justice were telling her, 'Please don't go,' " Mendez, 19, told Houston Chronicle.
Gomez left the party around 11 pm Friday to go to the hotel room. "I told her right before she left - she left early - I told her, 'Come here,' " Gonzalez, 17, said. Whispering to Gomez, she said "'Just please be safe, Jackie.' And I gave her a hug, and she left."
Kyren Block, another guest staying at Hyatt who came for a basketball tournament, said he heard a party going on all night in Gomez's room. "We knocked on the door to see if anything was going on, but they didn't answer," he said.
Police are awaiting the autopsy results.
