Montreal dropped the series opener on Saturday, but the real loss was the injury to Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, who suffered an apparent knee injury after Rangers forward Chris Kreider slid skates-first into him during the second period.
Price stayed in the game but was later pulled in the third period. He finished the night with 20 saves and four goals allowed.
"We've lost our best player, but we've faced adversity this year already," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said on Monday, via ESPN.
Therrien announced Price would miss the rest of the series and accused Kreider of being reckless.
"That's the truth," Therrien told the Associated Press. "And Kreider, that's not the first time he's going at goalies. So we end up losing our best player, but our group faced a lot of adversity throughout the course of the season. We have the attitude to respond really well, and that's what I'm expecting."
Canadiens goaltender Peter Budaj filled in for Price in the third period, giving up three goals and making five saves.
New York handedly won the series opener, 7-2. Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 20 saves and allowed just two goals. Rangers forward Martin St. Louis, whose mother passed away last week, was one of seven different Rangers to score, and he also recorded an assist during a third-period power play.
"It was an emotional time for everyone, but the guys have been behind me and supported me," St. Louis said. "My teammates are behind me and supporting me, and their effort was unbelievable."
