Cleveland can sweep their three-game series against Detroit with a win on Wednesday. They took the first game on Monday with a 5-4 victory and followed it up on Tuesday with a 6-2 win. Indians third baseman Mike Aviles hit a two-run double in the second inning to give Cleveland the lead, which they didn't relinquish for the rest of the game.
The Indians' limited the Detroit offense with the arm of starting pitcher Trevor Bauer, who gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out five batters.
"Performing well is always pleasing, especially when the team gets the win and you can contribute to it," Bauer told the Associated Press after the game. "That was the most frustrating thing for me last year, I would go out there and I didn't feel like I was contributing to a team win. It's nice to be able to do that this year."
Tuesday gave Bauer his first win of the season. Indians manager Terry Francona commended the Triple-A standout for being able to limit the damage Detroit's batters can do.
"He was aggressive, attacking the strike zone," Francona said. "He changed speeds and used all his pitches. That's not the easiest assignment, coming up from Triple-A to face them. He really did a great job."
Indians pitcher Zach McAllister (3-4, 5.36 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound on Wednesday and follow Bauer's performance. McAllister began the season winning three straight starts but has since posted a 0-4 record in his last five starts.
"He's going to have to be strong enough to look at these numbers of late and remind himself how good he is," Francona said. "He has to understand he is a good pitcher."
Max Scherzer (6-1, 1.83 ERA) will oppose McAllister. The Tigers pitcher is coming off Friday's 1-0 win at Boston.
