Two Students Arrested For Mixing Teacher's Water With Rat Poison

Two elementary school students in New York City were arrested after their fourth-grade teacher told police she believed they mixed her water with rat poison, NBC News reported.

The 51-year-old educator went to police on Monday and told them the incident may have happened during class at P.S. 315 in Brooklyn. According to officials, other students in the class said they saw the two boys put something in her water.

Following an investigation, a 9-year-old boy and 12-year-old boy were arrested and face charges of attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment.

The boys will be tried as juveniles, according to ABC News.

NYPD Commissioner William. J. Bratton told The New York Times that a "small amount" of rat poisoning was placed into the water bottle by the students.

"My understanding is the 9-year-old wanted to see what the reaction would be," Bratton said. "God knows where kids get these ideas."

Margie Feinberg, spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said she is "greatly relieved the teacher is recovering."

"Ensuring the safety of our entire schools community is our priority, and while this matter is still under investigation, we will take swift and appropriate action," she said.

The name of the teacher has not been released.
