The United Kingdom Electoral Commission says taking selfies while voting is against the law.
According to RTE News, the government agency is allowing polling places to ban the popular photo-taking method during this week's elections in Europe.
"The law relating to obtaining information in polling stations and disclosing such information is complex," the commission said in a statement. "Given the risk that someone taking a photo inside a polling station may be in breach of the law, whether intentionally or not, our advice is that you should not allow photos to be taken inside polling stations."
Anyone who is found guilty of breaking these rules could face a fine of up to £5,000, or up to six months' prison time.
The chief executive of the Electoral Reform Society told The Telegraph that while voters deserve privacy when exercising their right to vote, selfies add fun to the experience.
"Of course it's vital that people's privacy isn't invaded in the polling booth," Katie Ghose said. "But selfies could be a fun addition to the voting day ritual, especially for young people who are least likely to vote. Rather than seeking to take the fun out of politics we should be doing everything we can to make it more attractive to vote."
An electoral commission spokesman told The Telegraph that people should not remove information from a polling place, no matter the method.
"The law against releasing information obtained in a polling station is there to protect the integrity of the poll and the secrecy of the ballot," the spokesman said.
The official also said the law is laid out in the country's Representation of the People Act - a piece of legislation that allowed women the right to vote for the first time in 1928.
"Section 66 of the Representation of the People Act sets out the secrecy requirements at UK Parliamentary and local elections in England and Wales. Equivalent provisions apply at other elections and at referendums," the spokesman said.
The word selfie was recently added to The Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary's as an official word of the English language. Selfie is defined as an image of oneself taken by oneself, using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks.
