Russia Responds To Alleged Prince Charles Comment Comparing Putin To Hitler

Russian officials criticized Prince Charles for allegedly comparing President Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler during a trip to Canada, according to The Associated Press.

Charles, the oldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, reportedly made the comment in a private conversation with a woman who fled from the Nazis in WWII, likening Hitler's 1939 invasion of Poland to Russia' annexation of Crimea.

He told the woman Putin is "doing just about the same as Hitler," according to The Daily Mail.

Alexander Lukashevich, a spokesman for Russia's Foreign Ministry, said officials want an explanation from Charles if he actually made the comparison and want to find out if the British government feels the same way.

"If these words indeed were said, they don't befit a future British monarch," Lukashevich told reporters in Moscow on Thursday. "We consider the use of a member of the British royal family by the Western press for waging a propaganda campaign against Russia over the pressing international issue - the situation in Ukraine - as unacceptable, outrageous and base."

Additionally, the Russian Embassy in London released a statement about their plan to meet with officials from the British Foreign Office to discuss "official clarifications" of Charles' "outrageous remarks."

Clarence House, a spokesperson for the prince's London office, would not comment on the issue.

"However, we would like to stress that the Prince of Wales would not seek to make a public political statement during a private conversation," the office said.

Additionally, Prime Minister David Cameron declined to discuss the incident as well.
