Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will travel to Iowa to support Joni Ernst as she runs for U.S. Senate, according to The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier.
Romney will campaign on behalf of Ernst, a 43-year-old state senator, on May 30 in Cedar Rapids and Davenport. According to campaign aides, the events will be open to the public and further details will be released soon.
"We need Iowa to have a voice in the U.S. Senate that will protect and promote traditional conservative values, and Joni's proven record in the state senate, her decades of leadership as a military officer, and her commitment to the values that were passed on to her as a girl on a Montgomery County farm make it clear to me that she is the very best Iowa has to offer," Romney said in a statement.
In March, Romney sent an email announcing his endorsement of Ernst to his Iowa supporters.
Ernst, who first made national headlines after releasing a TV ad where she touts her experience with pig castration, is up against four other candidates for the GOP nomination. Whoever wins the nomination with run against U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley.
Former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin also endorsed Ernst in a Facebook post.
"If Nebraska's Deb Fischer can see through the bull in Washington, then Iowa's Joni Ernst can help her cut through the pork. Growing up on a hog farm in Southwest Iowa, Joni has taken her "pork cutting" skills to the Iowa State Senate where she has been a champion for life, small government, and lower taxes - voting for the largest tax cut in Iowa history. In Washington, she has pledged to defund Obamacare, limit the size of government, and protect life. As a concealed weapon license holder, she will fight to defend our Second Amendment rights - the NRA has given her an "A" rating," Palin wrote in March.
"Joni is a veteran of the Iraq war and continues her service as a Lt. Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard. She's been a fighter for freedom both in and out of uniform. Iowa - come together and send this Midwest Mama Grizzly roaring to Washington on her Harley so she can join with the good guys to get our country back on track!"
