Boston heads into Thursday looking to avoid a three-game sweep by Toronto. Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz gave up four earned runs in Wednesday's 6-4 loss, including two homers to Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion, who finished with three RBIs.
"It's crazy how this game is," Encarnacion told the Associated Press. "In April, I only had two homers; now I have (11) this month and two in one day. That shows you how crazy this is."
Equally as impressive as his turnaround in May, Wednesday's win was his second straight multi-homer game.
"I don't think you can get any hotter than this," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He's erased all that, though."
The Blue Jays offense as a whole has been productive against Boston, scoring 13 runs over the last two games of the series.
Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester (4-5, 2.67 ERA) is tasked on Wednesday with slowing down Toronto's batters and helping Boston avoid a three-game sweep. He's coming off Friday's 1-0 loss to Detroit, in which he allowed one run while fanning seven batters.
Mark Buehrle (7-1, 2.11) is scheduled to oppose Lester. Buehrle received a no-decision in Saturday's 4-2 win against Texas, who took the left-hander for two earned runs on five hits.
Red Sox infielder Dustin Pedroia and Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista are the batters to watch, according to the Associated Press. Pedroia bats .389 against Buehlre; Bausista, though only batting .193 against Lester, has four homers against the veteran.
