New York took a two-game lead in the conference finals with Monday's 3-1 win over Montreal. The Canadiens drew first blood, but the Rangers went on to score three unanswered goals behind Ryan McDonagh, Rick Nash and Martin St. Louis, who notched his fifth goal of the postseason despite still mourning the recent loss of his mother.
"It's been an emotional weekend," St. Louis told the Associated Press, referring to his mother's funeral. "I'll definitely never forget this weekend for many reasons, but I think the grieving process will still take a while.
"But that stuff is behind me. Tonight, we wanted to make sure we'd have the emotion we'd need to win this game because we knew they would come out hard, especially rallying, losing their best player (goaltender Carey Price), so I thought we answered."
Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, meanwhile, continued his impressive play in the series and made 40 saves.
"We knew they were going to come hard, but we put ourselves in a tough spot there by not getting pucks out," Lundqvist said. "They were all over us. But to tie it up quickly like that, I think that was important to kind of even out the momentum a little bit."
Rangers coach Alain Vigneault credited Lundqvist as the reason New York was able to take Game 2.
"He's the only reason we were still in the game," Vigneault said. "They had total control of the pressure. A lucky bounce changed the dynamics of the game."
Canadiens third-string goaltender Dustin Tokarski, who's starting in place of Price, made 27 saves in Game 2.
