Restaurant chain Tim Hortons, Inc. announced Thursday that customers can now make mobile payments at stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Customers will be able to pay with the TimmyMe app on iOS, Android and Blackberry 10, according to The Financial Post.
The Oakville, Ont.-based coffee chain began pilot testing the technology at select stores in December.
Customers can use TimmyMe to register a prepaid Tim Card by opening the app and scanning the screen at the register to pay. Customers can use the app's auto-reload feature to add $20 to pay for visits, as well as perform a one-time manual reload. The app allows users to save up to five cards, PC Magazine reported.
"Tim Hortons is committed to offering the ultimate guest experience, and that includes leveraging technology to offer our guests faster, convenient service," said David Clanachan, COO of Tim Hortons. "The launch of mobile barcode payments with Passbook support lets us do just that."
Tim Hortons current has over 3,600 restaurants in Canada and 870 in the U.S., CTV News reported.
The company also has 44 restaurants in the Middle East.
TimmyMe is also available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The app includes GPS tracking that consumers can use to find the 20 closest Tim Hortons stores. The device also lets users track people's orders, PC Magazine reported.
So far, the service has received a lot of criticism, earning only three stars from 28 ratings in the iTunes App Store. However, Clanachan is still confident in the service.
"Guests can now use their iPhone and iPad to make secure, quick and easy payments, which we hope will make their visit, coffee and meal with us even more enjoyable," he said.
Starbucks released its own payment service for U.S. locations in 2011. The service lets customers add money to their Starbucks Card Mobile app and pay with on-screen barcodes located at registers, according to PC Magazine.
Tim Hortons currently has locations in 11 U.S. states; Indiana, Kentucky, Delaware, Michigan, Maryland, Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and New York. New York is home to over 200 locations for the franchise.
