Chrome's 'OK Google' Voice Command Now Available for OS Users

Google announced on Wednesday its release of the "OK Google" voice command, which makes voice searching available to users of the Chrome OS.

Users can turn on the feature by tapping the microphone icon on Google.com, clicking "OK Google," and stating a command, according to PC Magazine.

The search giant first introduced voice commands for the desktop at its I/O developer conference in May of last year. The service was then released in November as a Chrome browser extension.

"OK Google" is available on new tabs and Google search pages, thanks to Chrome OS version 35, CNET reported. It is also available on pages that are already showing search results.

But the voice command feature does encounter issues sometimes, such as misunderstanding words or not knowing when a user has stopped talking. For the latter issue, users can get Google to stop listening and conduct searchers by adding the word "question."

The voice interface was introduced by Google earlier this year for beta users, PC Magazine reported. In addition to Chrome OS, it is now available on Mac, Windows and Linux.

"If you've ever tried to cook and search at the same time, say, when your hands are covered in flour and you need to know how many ounces are in a cup- you know it can be tricky," Ji Adam Dou, software engineer, said in a blog post in February.

Chrome OS runs Facebook, Google Docs and other Web apps, rather than Windows and Mac apps, CNET reported.

The browser-based operating system is available on Chromebook laptops.

"OK Google" gives users other options, such as setting a reminder or scheduling an alarm, PC Magazine reported.

The search giant also made updates to other versions of Chrome, such as the stable version of Chrome 35 and Chrome 35 on Android, CNET reported.

23 security bugs were fixed by Chrome 35's stable version, and Chrome 35 for Android lets users open recently-closed tabs and use the browser in mobile devices offering more than one window.
