A Dallas mother who was high on weed and PCP tried to drown her two daughters after they asked for snacks, officials said.
Sonya Ann Gardner, 35, was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a child. The police said she tried drowning the sisters aged 6 and 4 in a bathtub after they repeatedly asked for snacks. But her 18-year-old son Jydesmon Gardner, who was walking by the apartment Thursday night, heard the screams of the little girls. He went inside to see his mother trying to kill the daughters. He then fired a warning gunshot and saved his sisters, reports the Associated Press.
After the authorities arrived at the scene they found that Gardner was high on marijuana laced with PCP. A bond of $1 million has been set for her.
Shortly after saving the girls, Jydesmon fled the scene as he has an outstanding warrant against him. The New York Daily News reports that he might now face a felony charge in possession of a firearm.
Dallas police Maj. Rob Sherwin said that Jydesmon should come forward as a witness. "It appears that his actions may have saved the lives of these two children," he said at a press conference. "We would like to speak to Mr Gardner as a witness."
Child Protection Services placed the girls in foster care. The CPS said that Gardner did not have any issues with child custody before.
Gardner's family said were shocked and such an incident had never happened in their family. "We don't really understand why this happened but at the same time, it never happened before," Ernest Gardner, Gardner's brother, told MyFoxDFW. "For this to happen this is totally out of her character."
