A woman in California was charged with murder in connection to the deaths of her three young daughters and attempted murder of her mother, according to The New York Daily News.
On Tuesday, 30-year-old Carol Coronado was discovered in bed and holding a knife next to the bodies of her dead children -- three-years-old, two-years-old, and two-months-old.
Neighbors told media outlets that Coronado's mother ran for help after making the gruesome discovery. Though Coronado's husband was home at the time of the incident, he had been working outside.
One of the family's neighbors, Ashley Madrid, told The Daily Breeze that the father was working on his car when the grandmother broke the news to him.
"I saw when they were bringing him out," Madrid said. "He was crying. He was crying, 'She killed my daughters!'"
Once authorities arrived, the mother -- who was naked and only covered in a blanket -- was put in a patrol car and then placed in an ambulance.
"She was full of blood on her face and arms," Madrid said.
Coronado remains hospitalized in a jail ward, the Daily News said.
Lt. Dave Coleman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said authorities are looking into Coronado's medical history and mental health to determine how the murders unfolded, including the possibility of postpartum depression.
