Marvel Studios confirmed that director Edgar Wright left the project. Wright and Marvel released a joint statement and said the split was "due to differences in their version of the film," Deadline reports.
The statement also said that the departure was "amicable." The director had been attached to the superhero film since 2006 but a source told Deadline that Wright and the studio began having problems about two weeks ago.
Marvel said Wright's exit will not affect the July 2015 release date and a new director would be announced soon. "Ant-Man" stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym as well as Patrick Wilson, Evangeline Lily, Corey Stoll and Michael Pena.
In December 2013, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that Rudd would play the main character.
"When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," Feige said in a statement. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul when he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we'd ever met with about doing the work, we knew we'd found the right guy. We couldn't be more excited for our audiences to see what he's going to do to bring 'Ant-Man' to life."
It was rumored that Lily would either play Ant-Man's wife, Wasp, or Hank Pym's daughter, according to Variety. In the comics, Pym didn't have a daughter but Variety said "Cornish and Wright could certainly have switched things up in their version by giving him one."
