New York (28-23) heads into Monday looking for their third straight win after splitting a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox. Their latest victory, Sunday's 7-1 rout of Chicago, saw Yankees star Derek Jeter collect four hits, two RBIs and one run.
"I just want to try to help us win. That's it," Jeter told the Associated Press. "Our job is, if there's a guy on second base and I've got to hit a ground ball to second to move him over, I'll do it. I don't think about personal statistics. I think about trying to help us win."
Yankees rookie pitcher Chase Whitley (0-0, 1.00 ERA) is slated to start on Monday. Although he hasn't yet notched a win, he's allowed only one earned run in his first two starts since being called up from Triple-A. Both starts resulted in no-decisions, according to the Associated Press.
Opposing the rookie will be Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha (3-3, 2.54 ERA). Wacha is coming off a 3-2 win on Wednesday against Arizona, whom he limited to only two hits and no earned runs. Wacha, who's day on Wednesday ended early after a foul ball hit his elbow while sitting in the dugout, says he doesn't expect the bruised elbow to affect him.
"Everything feels good. I have all the range of motion and everything that I was looking for," Wacha told the team website. "As far as I know, I'm on track. The arm feels great and I just have the normal soreness after pitching yesterday."
