David Beckham Plays Final Home Match, Gives Teary Goodbye To Fans (VIDEO)

David Beckham played in his final home game on Saturday as a professional footballer. In a teary goodbye, he bid the home crowd farewell.

His wife, Victoria Beckham, and former French president Nicolas Sarkozy were among the 45,000 people packed into the Parc des Princes to watch Beckham's final home game. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Carlo Ancelotti appointed Beckham team captain for the night, and Beckham played for most of the match in PSG's 3-1 victory over Brest.

Ancelotti substituted Beckham for Ezequiel Lavezzi at the 82nd minute, according to CNN. Emotion overcame him as he realized that this was his last time on PSG's home turf. Tears streamed down his face as he shook hands with and hugged players on the field. The fans gave Beckham a roaring standing ovation.

It was a sad day for football fans. Beckham was arguably one of the sport's most iconic figures since beginning his professional career in 1993 with Manchester United. The 38-year-old announced his retirement on Thursday, saying he wanted to end his career on a high note.

Beckham leaves behind an impressive legacy. He's the first player to ever win four titles with four different countries - Manchester United, Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and, most recently, PSG. Under former Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson, Beckham won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one UEFA Champions League title.

He also played in a record 115 games for England's national team.

Fans celebrated in the stadium long after the final whistle, and Beckham took a moment to say good-bye.

"Thanks to everyone in Paris, to all of my teammates, the staff and fans," he said. "It's been very special to finish my career here."

Beckham will play his final game on May 26 against Lorient.
