Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher reportedly is unlikely to become the next Los Angeles Lakers coach. The Lakers, meanwhile, reportedly have already interviewed assistant coach Kurt Rambis and are expected to interview coaches Alvin Gentry and Lionel Hollins this week.
Fisher may not be reuniting any time soon with his former team. The veteran, who won five championships with the Lakers, has been linked to both the New York Knicks and the Lakers' head coaching jobs, but a recent report indicates Fisher is unlikely to become the Lakers' next coach.
"Regarding Derek Fisher, certainly a more novel option given his lack of coaching experience, two people told me on Tuesday not to expect him to become the next Lakers head coach, which is no surprise," Kevin Ding of Bleacher Report wrote on Wednesday. "Fisher has always been unsure about the grinding life of a coach."
Ding also became the second to report Fisher may take a year off from basketball after this season.
The Lakers' coaching search, meanwhile, continued this week.
"The Lakers have interviewed Kurt Rambis to be their head coach, The Times has learned," Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times tweeted on Tuesday. "They'll (meet) with Gentry on Weds. + Hollins on Thurs."
Los Angeles appears to want a veteran coach to replace Mike D'Antoni. The Lakers have already met with Mike Dunleavy, who Bleacher Report reported isn't a serious contender, and Byron Scott.
A number of experienced college coaches -- Kentucky's John Calipari, UConn's Kevin Ollie and UNC's Roy Williams -- also have been reported as potential targets, although none seem likely to depart their respective colleges.
One possible new candidate could be Florida coach Billy Donovan, who didn't rule out making a leap to the NBA next season.
