Acer's Build Your Own Cloud Computing Service Apps Update Hits Market

Acer's Build-Your-Own-Cloud service apps will work with mobile devices and personal computers when they're released in late June.

The update to the company's already-existing cloud apps enables consumers to move files onto the gadgets, according to Fansided.

The president of the computer maker's Build Your Own Cloud and tablet business told Fansided that both Acer and non-Acer users can use the feature.

"Before, only Acer device owners could use the apps. But from now on, you don't have to own an Acer device," Maverick Shih said.

The service, dubbed "ab," will store all information to a personal computer so users have their own data center. This differs from online storage devices Dropbox and Google Drive.

Four apps will also transfer, store, and allow consumers to share photos, music, files and Microsoft Office documents once they install the app on their preferred device.

While the cloud apps cost the consumers nothing, Acer wants to provide additional options with a price tag.

Shih said the days of one-and-done deals between companies and their customers are over.

"The day we sell the device to the consumer is when we really start doing business with them," Shih said. "Before, the old Acer or other hardware companies would just sell the hardware and say 'Bye-bye, don't find me again."

Shih told PC World Acer's smart cars that link consumers home devices could be a better fit than what competitors Google, Microsoft and Amazon offer.

"(Many such manufacturers) didn't have to deal with the cloud before. So they need to find a company that understands both hardware and software," Shih said.

According to PC World, while Acer may be new to the wireless storage game, the company has a cloud computing data center in Taiwan since 2001. The company then purchased technology company iGWare for $320 million in 2011.
