Selena Gomez's grandfather, Ricardo Gomez, recently spoke with Radar Online and said that the 21-year-old singer is being treated for lupus but is doing well.
"She's in treatment," he said, adding that Selena was diagnosed with the disease several years ago. "She's getting along pretty good."
Ricardo did say that Selena's hectic work schedule as well as her tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber does take a toll on her and sometimes causes the family to worry.
"What worries [us] more is that she doesn't know how to say no. She won't take time for herself to relax, to eat well," Ricardo said.
According to Radar, Selena's grandfather blames part of her downward spiral on the "Boyfriend" singer. He said at first, the family adored Bieber but they have noticed that he's changed.
"He was just a nice little fella," Ricardo said. "Totally different from what he is right now... It just makes me feel upset because he used to be a real nice boy."
"We worry," he continued. "We worry not just because of the relationship with Selena. We worry for him. We hate to see him in trouble."
Even though Bieber and Gomez split a few months, the grandfather said he knows the two are still in contact with each other.
"They still go out," he told Radar. "They still go out."
He said Bieber's friends see Gomez as a "good influence for him" and they "say it is good for her to be next to him... Keep him out of the bad habits."
"He's just at this age, everything he does is about having fun," Gomez said. "He doesn't think of the consequences, I think because he's so young."
Despite Bieber's negative media attention, Ricardo admitted that the family still likes the 20-year-old singer and wouldn't mind if Bieber and Selena got engaged.
"I think she loves him," he said. "We'd be happy [if Justin proposed] because she's happy with him. She knows that whatever she decides to do, I mean we stay behind her."
