One Dead, One Injured In New Jersey Restaurant Collapse

One construction worker was killed and another was injured after the inside of a New Jersey restaurant collapsed on Friday, according to ABC News.

The incident took place at Coda Restaurant in Maplewood. A construction crew was reportedly building a staircase when the floor above the basement began to crumble.

"Basically, what they were doing is building stairs down to the basement from inside the restaurant," Maplewood resident Lee Navlen told CBS News. "They have to go outside to get to the basement, so it's been a big construction job."

The collapse occurred in an area between the dining room and kitchen.

"The first floor collapsed into the basement," Maplewood Fire Deputy Chief Joseph Callaghan said. "He was trapped under wooden beams and there was a side collapse from the walls that was rock and dirt."

Callaghan said the injured worker is in serious condition. Additionally, a third worker escaped without injury.

Nearby businesses were evacuated following the collapse and the primary cause of the incident is under investigation.
