World No. 1 Nadal defeated up-and-comer Dominic Thiem in straight sets to advance to the third round. The Spaniard, though, admitted the match was far more difficult than the three-set stat line suggests.

"It was a dangerous match, dangerous opponent today," Nadal said, via the National Post. "I am happy with the way I resisted. When I had to play long points I did well. When I had to attack and move him, I think I did well. ... I continued to deploy an attacking style and him move around the court. I put pressure on him."

Thiem managed to break Nadal's serve twice.

"He will have his chances to become a top star and fight for these tournaments," Nadal said. "I really fought back against his attacks."

Nadal also indicated young players like Thiem will soon surpass tennis' current generation of stars.

"I think that our generation is now on the way out," Nadal said, via the Daily Mail. "(Andy) Murray, (Novak) Djokovic, (David) Ferrer and (Tomas) Berdych and others, (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga, as well, we have been here for a long while.

"A generation is walking away and others will replace us. It will not come overnight, but it will come. I think (Thiem) has a huge potential and could be one of the ones whos's going to replace us. His tennis style is really good. What he could work on is his footwork and how he moves on the court. That's all."

Nadal plays Mayer, who's ranked No. 65 in the World, in the third round on Saturday. Mayer defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili to earn a spot against Nadal.
