Galifianakis Homeless Woman: "Hangover III" Star Rescues 87-year Old From Having No Home

Actor and comedian Zach Galifianakis is taking a woman he saved from homelessness to the premiere of “The Hangover Part III”, according to the New York Daily News.

Before he became famous, Galifianakis used a laundromat where Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist, now age 87, volunteered. The two have been friends for nearly 20 years. So when he found out two years ago she had become homeless, the Hollywood star got her a one bedroom apartment and began paying her monthly rent. Prior to her new digs, Haist had been staying with various friends each night.

Haist has been out to dinner and accompanied Galifianakis to premieres many times before. So it is no surprise she is his date for Monday’s premiere of the third and final installment in the “Hangover” series.

“I’m looking forward to it, I like the excitement of it,” said Haist.

The man who plays Alan Garner in the series has taken Haist to “Hangover II” and “The Campaign.” However, at the time, no one knew her relation to the actor.

Galifianakis has picked her up in a limousine, right at her doorstep, and whisked her away.

“If he’s in town, he takes me. Otherwise he lets me take a friend. I dress up nice and a friend helps me with my makeup. It’s fun, not something I’ve ever dreamed I’d experience. The limo takes me home afterwards,” said Haist.

“All the fans were taking photos and I waved at them, I said, ‘They don’t know who I am!’ ” added Haist referring to the previous premieres she has attended.

When asked if she had ever been mistaken for his grandma, she jokingly said no and said she has been mistaken for his girlfriend.
