Seth Macfarlane announced on Twitter Monday he will not be returning to host the Oscars next year. In a two-tweet statement he said:
Traumatized critics exhale: I'm unable to do the Oscars again. Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep. However, I highly recommend the job, as Zadan and Meron are two of the most talented producers in the business. My suggestion for host is Joaquin Phoenix.
With the maker of “Family Guy” hosting this year, the award show received higher ratings among younger viewers.
After this year’s Oscars’ Macfarlane received mixed reviews. Some felt he did a marvelous job, like Tim Goodman of the HollywoodReporter.com:
“I knew the Oscars were going to be a hot topic when so many people -- who seemed to be waiting for MacFarlane to fall on his face -- thought he was a disaster when he showed up to announce the nominees. Guess what? He was far from it. He was fine. He was himself.”
However, some did not take kindly to his opening monologue, according to the Huffington Post. For example, @JoeHughes28 tweeted:
"Blah blah Hitler joke blah blah Racism joke blah blah I hate women." -- Seth MacFarlane's opening monologue for the Oscars”
@blackposimage tweeted:
Really with the slavery joke in the opening!!! And the Chris Brown and Rhianna joke??? Seth Macfarlane!!! N-word joke... #startitoff
If you know anything about “Family Guy”, Macfarlane’s Sunday night cartoon on FOX, these jokes may have been extremely offensive but they weren’t much of a surprise.
Macfarlane is also the creator of the cartoon “American Dad” and the movie “Ted.”
