[Warning: following points may contain plot spoilers]
1. "The events take place 3 years after Man of Steel, Metropolis is recovering really well...thanks to LexCorp for the most part." (Source: MoviePilot)
2. "For the most part, Superman is positively viewed around the World...because he's been helping out a lot, but without 'interfering.'" (Source: MoviePilot)
3. "There is a growing regional warfare [hundreds already dead] in the Middle East...this is critical because the countries involved possess weapons of mass destruction." (Source: MoviePilot)
4. "The US decide to step in (duh, as usual) and help out the 'good' side. The Media's been debating whether or not Superman should intervene too. Kal-El does not want to get involved but he realizes the gravity of the situation...especially if one of the party involved acts stupid and press the "doomsday" buttons. He discusses this with Martha Kent and Lois Lane." (Source: MoviePilot)
5. "The US involvement leads to the demise of the 'bad' side, which, as sore losers, send several massively destructive bombs towards the US on the East Coast [check The Dark Knight Returns, part 2]. He manages to stop most of them except for 2. The consequences are disastrous, of course. Like many other cities on the east coast, Metropolis and Gotham suffer severe casualties. Superman feels a great sorrow... and deems himself responsible! Now, he thinks he should have intervened instead of passively watching. And once again, Metropolis, along with other cities, is in a state of destruction." (Source: MoviePilot)
