Oculus Rift and Samsung Reported to Work Together on VR Headset

A new report from Engadget claims that Oculus VR is working with Samsung Group on a virtual reality device.

The device would use Samsung's high resolution OLED phone screens for a display, according to Gamespot.

The report said that for the collaboration, Samsung would have early access to Oculus' mobile software development kit. Oculus could also gain entry to the South Korean company's next-generation OLED screen with a resolution greater than 1080p ahead of public release.

Samsung's smartphones would serve as the headset's display, Android and Me reported. By plugging into the headset, the phone would function as a display, as well as a CPU and a camera.

The two companies would be able to cut costs by not integrating all of the internal features into the helmet. The phone's camera could also be used through the headset, but officials warn that the camera could experience issues with lagging.

The device's software is reported to still be in a beta form. Samsung is currently working on different arrangements for interactivity such as head movements, a gamepad, and voice controls. It has not been revealed which of these features will be included in the helmet, Android and Me reported.

The report also claims that Samsung is looking to release the helmet later this year. Current prototypes can run off Samsung's Galaxy S4. However, the consumer model is said to need at least a Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S4 prototype does not have a dedicated display, instead requiring users to slide their phone into the headset with built-in movement sensors, Gamespot reported.

Sources with access to development kits said they enjoyed wearing the helmets, adding that the built-in camera lets them switch from virtual reality to augmented reality.

The report supports earlier rumors about Samsung working on a virtual reality device that the company will announce this year, Gamespot reported.

Oculus announced its plans to add virtual reality support to mobile devices last year. Oculus VR, creator of Oculus Rift, was purchased earlier this year by Facebook for $2 billion.
