Kansas City looks to snap a two-game losing streak on Monday when they visit St. Louis. Royals pitcher Danny Duffy (2-5, 3.57 ERA) gets the start and is hoping to bounce back from his last two starts, in which he gave up five runs in each game.
"My velocity dipped pretty drastically compared to the prior start, but I think it's just something that all pitchers go through every now and then," Duffy told the Associated Press. "The good ones pitch through it and get outs anyway, and I didn't. So depending on what I've got in the tank on Monday, I'm going to make better pitches. I can get outs no matter what and there are no excuses for giving it up like I did."
Duffy will be opposed by Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller (6-4, 3.94), who also struggled in his last two starts. Miller had his six-game winning streak ended on May 23 when he gave up four runs against Cincinnati; the right-hander followed that loss with a loss on Wednesday against the New York Yankees, who took him for seven runs.
"It'll be hard to swallow, but then he's got to get back to work," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com. "He worked hard to get a good spot and was getting positive results, as far as wins go, without having his good stuff. Right now is not the time to go to the drawing board and completely forget what he has been able to do."
