Pixel Opus, a new studio at Sony Computer Entertainment, is set to reveal its projects at the upcoming E3 2014 event.
E3 is an annual gaming event held in Los Angeles, Calif., according to The International Business Times.
The new studio's employees are former students of Carnegie Mellon University. They worked with Sony on a coursework in which they created prototype games for PlayStation Vita.
"Historically, I've always been aware of these programs. It's only in recent years that they've become meaningful," said Alex Lee, executive producer at Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Many of the game design students that graduated from Carnegie Mellon went on to work at Sony as interns and were eventually hired, egmr.net reported.
Lee said the kind of design courses that the students went through are becoming more important for creating video games.
Sony Computer Entertainment currently has 12 different internal studios in North America, Europe and Japan under its Worldwide Studios banner, Polygon reported.
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are currently looking at the top game design schools and their work, The New York Times reported.
"They're producing some of the most stunning and groundbreaking games on the planet right now," said Chris Charla, head of a Microsoft program that assists independent developers in publishing their games on Xbox One.
Other developments from Sony are expected to be shown at E3, Gamespot reported. The platform for Pixel Opus's new game was not revealed. The location of the studio was also not mentioned.
The E3 2014 press conference will begin on Monday, June 9th at 9 p.m. EDT (6 p.m. PDT).
