Yahoo announced renovations and substantial updates to its photo-sharing site Flickr less than a day after news of purchasing Tumblr for over $1 billion broke, according to ABC News.
The makeover done to Flickr is headlined by Yahoo's decision to give users one free terabyte of storage. Although the free storage will be supported by advertisements, the 1TB of space equals 1,024 gigabytes trumps the amount given by its competitors.
Google charges $49.99 a month for 1TB, and the 1TB offered by Yahoo is nearly 70 times more than the 15 Gigabytes of free space offered by Google.
Yahoo said the announcement is essentially offering unlimited storage, and that 1TB can hold over half of a million photos.
The changes to Flickr also includes a face-lift to give the site a new, sleek interface, as well as, a new Android app to go with the already made iOS app.
"When I came to Yahoo, the Internet petitioned me 'Please Make Flickr Awesome Again,' and now I think Flickr is awesome again," Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said at a New York press event on Monday night. "I wasn't the one who did it. I want to thank the team who did this. Photos make the world go around, Flickr was awesome once, and we're going to make it awesome again."
Along with a new homepage, Flickr has also changed the way the pictures are shown on the website following the conversion. Uploaded pictures have much more eye appeal, and include more picture and less words and clutter.
Yahoo clearly wasn't done making noise as the company made another big splash by revamping Flickr basically hours after it obtained Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Yahoo might not be done with this overhaul either, as the company looks to ensure a well-rounded, complete revamp of the site it obtained in 2005.
