Showtime has ordered a second season of "Penny Dreadful."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime announced Wednesday that the series will return for a 10 episode-long season two in 2015. "Penny Dreadful" is a Victorian-era horror thriller and stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green.
The series was awarded eight-episodes for its first season with writer-producer John Logan. The show includes classic creatures and characters such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Harry Treadaway, Danny Sapani and Billie Piper.
"Picking up Penny Dreadful was one of the easiest decisions I've made," David Nevins, president of Showtime Network, said in a statement. "The series has had worldwide impact, drawing big, passionate audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, and more than any other show on our network, has hit the bullseye with viewers who want to watch television in all the new ways that are available."
Nevins added: "John Logan has deftly created an epic series that has drawn raves from a wide-range of audiences from quality drama lovers to critics, to hardcore genre fans. We look forward to working once again with our partners at Sky Atlantic and are extremely excited for what's in store for season two."
The first episode was been seen by 3.6 million people through Showtime on Demand and the streaming service Showtime Anytime. The drama averages 4.8 million weekly viewers.
Nevins said the show would re-establish passionate genre fans in the post-'Dexter' era. Times TV critic Robert Lloyd called the show "darkly sublime."
"The goal here was to see if we could do a genre show, a horror show, but with all the sophistication and depth of a Showtime show and John Logan ended up being the person to do it," Nevins told Entertainment Weekly. "It's been well reviewed by mainstream critics, it's giving us a Comic-Con-appeal show. It's a whole new world as imagined by Logan."
"Penny Dreadful" airs Sundays 10 p.m. on Showtime.
