American Airlines Group's new Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas operations center will house the company's daily processes when it opens in 2015.
According to The Dallas Morning News, the merged American Airlines and U.S. Airways airline organization will build the property near American's existing 4333 Amon Carter Blvd headquarters, located south of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Another center, west of Fort Worth's state highway 360 and north of FAA Boulevard, currently houses American's flight task management operations.
American did not announce plans to replace its current facility until Wednesday. The airline originally intended to shut down U.S. Airways' operations center near Pittsburgh, Pa., and consolidate the two into one Dallas-Fort Worth location.
Three American executives told impacted employees in a letter that building a new facility was the best way to expand for the future.
"It became apparent that the best long-term solution is a new, state-of-the-art facility that can house all of our team members and the technology needed for our daily demands," the company said in a statement.
The company's chairman said the new merged airline has done well since both airlines closed their merger deal Dec. 9.
"On behalf of the board and particularly myself, I want to thank Tom for his leadership and graciousness in getting us through this transition period," Doug Parker said.
According to The Morning News, operations centers handle flight planning, dispatch, and monitoring services, and the weight and balance of each plane before it departs. Monitoring a flight's status, delays, and cancellations are also handled by this sector.
The former American Airlines gave up gates at Washington D.C.'s Reagan National Airport as part of the merger, according to the Associated Press. The move decreases departures by 15 percent.
Both airlines also left two gates in Chicago, Ill., Los Angeles, Calif., Dallas, Texas, Boston, Mass., and Miami, Fla.
